Unpaywall APP: Find Open Access versions of paywalled research papers

Unpaywall is a free browser extension that harvest Open Access content from over 50,000 publishers and repositories worldwide, including preprint servers and institutional databases.

Once installed in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Unpaywall brings up a colored tab on the side of the screen when a user hits a paywalled paper:

Gold tab for Gold OA, articles available from the publisher under an open license.
Green tab for Green OA articles on a preprint server or institutional repository.
Blue tab for articles available on the current page, but lacking license information (often that’s because you’re browsing from behind the paywall).
